Now take the second piece of shed felt and lay it across the roof, ensuring there is an overlap over the first roll of felt – try to ensure this is around 5-7.5cm. Again, nail the top of the roofing felt into place. 5. Add felt adhesive Generally we do not see the need for the placement of a membrane (roofing felt or IKO underlay for all garden buildings as it is not generally necessary for leisure buildings and has not been recommended for over 15 years. Felt roof repair is relatively easy. The material can simply be patched up if there is a tear or hole in the roof, unlike other roof materials that can have a much more complex and time-consuming repair process. Budget-friendly To carry out the ridge detailing cut the individual tabs from a strip mitred by 40mm. On the roof again use a chalk line or straight edge to ensure correct positioning and alignment. Starting at one end locate the tap with the mitred edge, pointing along the ridge. Nail into position, ensuring that each ridge shingle overlaps the previous one, exposing about 145mm.

Once both sides of the roof have been felted, a capping sheet is required. This is a piece of felt that sits over the ridge of the roof. The capping sheet needs to be placed across the top of the roof, ensuring that there is a 7.5cm overlap over the felt on each side of the roof. Apply felt roof adhesive to the underside of the ridge sheet on both sides and press it into place, before nailing it down at 5cm intervals. Different roof types require different application methods. Here are some steps to felting a shed roof! 1. Preparation Next, you need to make shingle strips for the roof edges. Cut off the tabs from a single shingle strip to create the detailing pieces. Then fit your shingle underlay onto the exposed roof. Ensure that your underlay extends beyond the edges of the roof by around 50mm. The underlay will be applied in strips, with each strip overlapping the previous one by at least 75mm. Then turn down the edges and nail it at 500mm centres. Preparing The Roof For Felt Shingles

Be aware, when folding the edge pieces and in cold conditions, you may need to warm the material first to make it more supple and pliable. Next, lay the second layer of felt on the roof. Ensure any joins on the first layer are overlapped, and any air bubbles have been smoothed out, and then nail it down as before. 8. Spread adhesive The bottom edge of each should just overlap the top of the cutouts in the shingles beneath it. For square butt shingles, there should be about 145mm of each tab exposed. Or if you’re using fish-scale shingles, leave 135mm.

Now lay the roofing felt out across the roof, or dry ground, and leave it there for half an hour. Once it’s been rested it should be easier to manipulate and fix into place. 4. Lay the first piece of felt

Now spread a layer of felt adhesive over your nailed-down roof sheets. This should be relatively thin and even. 7. Lay the second layer of felt Pat down the surface with a trowel, or by walking on it. This will help to ensure there is a tight fit and that all three layers of felt are bonded together. 10. Add the final layer of adhesive and gravel At Roofing Superstore our choice of flat roof materialsincludes everything you need to create a long-lasting, weatherproof flat roof that performs and looks good too. Roofing felt For maximum life, most manufacturers recommend the use of an underlay - our felt shingle underlay is the perfect partner for these Supaflex Felt Roof Shingles. Felt is an extremely lightweight material, which means it can be used on a number of weaker and less structurally sound buildings, such as garden sheds and outbuildings without any concerns that it will be too heavy. Easy to installBefore beginning to felt a flat roof, it is important to ensure the roof is stable and able to withstand the weight of someone standing on it. If there are any rotten pieces of timber, these should be replaced before work can begin. Any old or pre-existing flat roof felt should also be removed at this point. 2. Calculate the amount of felt required Bitumen felt roof shingles are a classic choice for shed roof coverings and re-roofing a shed roof. These felt shingles make the perfect outbuilding cover because they are waterproof, inexpensive and good looking! Bitumen felt shingles come in an array of designs and colours to suit your style and the rest of your outdoor space. Aesthetics: Available in a range of styles, colours, and textures, felt shingles give you the freedom to create the perfect aesthetic for you. Each tile has a bitumen strip which melts in the heat of the sun securing your shingles. As an option we offer felt shingle glue and this is also recommended by IKO. We recommend bitumen glue is at least used on the ridge tiles and the first leading edge roof tiles. We recommend shingle glue is used especially in the colder months as it takes longer for the bitumen glue to melt. Shingle glue is also highly recommended in very exposed locations.

Rolled roofing is very adaptable and can be cut into 12-inch by 36-inch strips to act as hips and ridges or 9-inch strips for eaves and rakes. Ashbrook Roofing is an experienced roofing company, not only sells a range of shed felt but we also have a team of roofers using it on buildings across the country. For more information on shed roofing materials, get in touch. Another benefit of using felt on a roof is that it is relatively inexpensive, whilst still providing a good and durable roofing surface. This is why it is perfect for low-scale and relatively low-budget projects, to create a functional yet low-cost roof. Ashbrook Roofing feels sure that you’ll agree, that a few hours of work to fit felt roof shingles will dramatically improve the look of your shed and not only increase its lifespan but protect its contents from the worst of the British weather.Bitumen felt shingles are manufactured by pressing granules into a glass fibre bitumen felt strip. These strips feature designs like ‘ square butt’, which is a simple square pattern on the finished roof, or ‘ hexagonal’ which offers more contemporary hexagonal finishes. You’re also able to find ‘ half round’ style bitumen felt shingles which are the most traditional types of shingles that give a scalloped look. Roofing felt is used to achieve a waterproof and durable finish on top of shed roofs, garden building roofs and outhouses. Available as torch-on bitumen felt or self-adhesive bitumen felt, leading manufacturers such as IKO and Icopal make up our range of roofing felt so you can be sure no matter which product you choose that your roofing felt will be of the highest quality. Rolled roofing will not make your structure any more attractive. It is generally considered a less attractive roofing material than shingles or other types of roofing systems.Homeowner's associations in gated communities may not allow the installation of any structure with rolled roofing, even outbuildings.
