Description

I would definitely recommend the updated version to any student doing a GCSE in Physics in the near future - this book makes a big difference to revision. As well as author of Chemistry for You, Lawrie Ryan is also author of the best selling Advanced Chemistry for You and is series editor of OUP's AQA Science series for GCSE.

Chemistry for You 5th Edition - Oxford University Press GCSE Chemistry for You 5th Edition - Oxford University Press

Chemistry provides an excellent opportunity for the development of your critical faculties, and also instils important transferable skills that will serve you well, whatever your subsequent choice of career. Covering all GCSE specifications, this tried and tested series has been fully updated to match the (9-1) GCSE Chemistry specifications for first examination in 2018, as well as international specifications. The MChem is a four-year course and is not modular, in the sense that the subject is taught and examined as a whole, enabling us to explore the links within the subject. If you’re naturally curious, the type of person who questions why things are and how they work, and also have a love of numbers and analysis, chemistry could be the subject for you! Examples give you support throughout the course with a large number of questions for you to practise, helping you gain confidence and do better in your exams.

This textbook contains a comprehensive range of optional experiments and investigations within the text with additional guidance to help students understand the results of their work.

There are also many options for work-based learning, and many providers offer chemistry-related apprenticeships. You may choose to take up the option to live in your college for the whole of your time at Oxford, or you might decide to arrange your own accommodation after your first year – perhaps because you want to live with friends from other colleges. There are over 60 apprenticeships in the health and sciencesector available in England, with more in development. Most tutorials, classes, and lectures are delivered by academic staff who are members of the department.

Chemistry For You has been written for a wide range of middle-ability students who will benefit from its motivational style, leading them to better achievement at GCSE.

It contains a bank of practice questions for consolidation of learning and to help students of all abilities bridge the gap between GCSE and A Level study.Such regular and rigorous academic discussion develops and facilitates learning in a way that isn’t possible through lectures alone. Some of the biggest problems that face humanity are solved – via medicine, or via social and economic improvements – by the discoveries made by chemists. Chemistry underpins the conceptual framework and methodology of biochemistry and molecular medicine and is at the heart of many major industries. Current students also actively support students in earlier years, sometimes as part of a college ‘family’ or as peer supporters trained by the University’s Counselling Service. If your personal or educational circumstances have meant you are unlikely to achieve the grades listed above for undergraduate study, but you still have a strong interest in the subject, then applying for Chemistry with a Foundation Year might be right for you.

Advanced for You Second Edition - Oxford University Press Advanced for You Second Edition - Oxford University Press

Over the past two years, I've been able to meet and talk at length with some of the best-known scientists in the UK and beyond, including invaluable contacts in my own field who I've kept in contact with ever since. Studying chemistry will equip you with valuable life skills including reason and logic, communication, presentation, analysis, observation, and many, many more skills which are valued by all job sectors. During the second year of the course, students build up their understanding of the subject and cover most of the core material in the degree. Our academic year is made up of three eight-week terms, so you would not usually need to be in Oxford for much more than six months of the year but may wish to budget over a nine-month period to ensure you also have sufficient funds during the holidays to meet essential costs.Key points are clearly highlighted with useful end-of-chapter summaries, and a friendly reading level throughout. If you’re not sure university is right for you, but you love chemistry, an apprenticeship or a degree apprenticeship may suit you perfectly. Topics are laid out as single pages or double-page spreads in full colour with helpful diagrams and clear text to make it easy for you to understand Chemistry and gain success. Many students find work placements during vacations through the Careers Service and there are some opportunities within the department.
