Description

It’s all quite high-flown stuff but sometimes its good to read an emotional fantasy, in that the characters are given reign to express emotions that would be unlikely to happen in reality. Unfortunately for him, to reach Terra, "Eisenstein" must pass trough the warp and there the foulest of the Chaos Gods will rise unspeakable monsters against him. These are amazing action novels dripping with emotion and sentiment that also sometimes piss me off because of the double-crossing and backstabbing, even though by now I should know what to expect. But when the fleeing Eisenstein is damaged by enemy fire, it becomes stranded in the warp - the realm of the Dark Powers. Dark and atmospheric, Flight of the Eisenstein also deals with some interesting developments – how do other legions than the Sons of Horus react to the Warmaster’s betrayal?

Der Tragödie nächster Abschnitt führt uns nun zu den Astartes der Death Guard mit ihrem abtrüngigen Primarch Mortarion.

In a vast galaxy where instantaneous communication is impossible, you place your trust in your brothers who have campaigned with you, meaning claims of betrayal are difficult to process. However, the book itself benefits from having a smaller dramatis personae from Counter’s first novel in the series, or at least once the action reaches the Eisenstein. Apothecary Fabius of the Emperor's Children is not listed in the Dramatis Personae, but makes a brief appearance in Chapter Six; Fabius is a major antagonist in James Swallow's Blood Angels (Novel Series).

In the Warp the ship's Geller engines fail, allowing a horde of undead rotting Plague Marines aboard. There Solun Decius gives in to the poison in his body and is transformed into The Lord of the Flies and rampages through the fortress, fighting Garro's men and Sisters of Silence alike until Garro finally kills him in the desert of Luna's surface. Garro is a fascinating character, bound to serve but with his own scale of morality that sets him apart from the dour, unimaginative heroes of most space operas.

Ordinarily the hero would be a cypher, ultimately doomed to die and serving little purpose except to drive the arc forward. As the book goes on, we're treated to glimpses inside a fascinating society, great battles and a tense chase before things really start to get nasty. The story follows on directly from the horrors of the massacre at Istavaan III, where loyalist legions are slaughtered by those whom follow Horus. Anyway, I would say that I had grown very fond of The Sons of Horus and The Emperor's Children, but without a doubt by the end of 'The Flight' I had become very much attached to The Death Guard also. That’s really the main flaw that I found in Flight of the Eisenstein, for the rest of this book manages to still be enjoyable, for reasons that I’ve already mentioned.
