This book had everything in it that I love; good and bad friendships, falling in and out of love and dealing with the everyday stresses of life and families. Every character has something deeply relatable and charming about them; all of them are dazzling but far from perfect in the best of ways. But, understanding your place in the world through your desirability deeply impacts one’s sense of self. I have been on the receiving end of some very bad friendships so know the hurt and devastation it can cause.I will be honest, at the start of this book I was struggling with all the various friend names and groups and on the surface the storyline seemed to be a tad fluffy. It is the story of three women: Lexi (a successful podcaster), Joanne (a new mum) and Claire (a nanny with mental health issues) who are all struggling within their close friendships as they navigate changes in their lives. Lexi starts to realise she should never have mixed business with friendship, but is it too late to save their relationship? However, I really struggled with reading My Hot Friend at the beginning and came close to giving up on it about a third through.

Joanne has lived the party life and is not ready to settle down yet but having a baby forces her to rethink. Although the book is very funny at times, it also gave me serious pause, where I put it down and just sat with it for a few minutes.Claire's worried that her old friends are talking about her behind her back - things haven't been the same since her bad spell the previous year.

I couldn't put it down but it also made me desperately sad for the characters and for myself as it echoed experiences I've had. How are they to navigate the relationships that have been so important to them for so long and how it is possible to move on. Normally her WhatsApp group “the bitch herd” is hopping but she begins to worry that her friends have set up a separate group without her, and are keeping her out of their lives.My Hot Friend is her latest book, published today and it is overflowing with all the things I love and have come to expect from Sophie White's books. A tale of three Dublin gals with very different lives intertwined, looking at what really happens when your best friends change which planet they live on compared to your lifestyle, the heartbreak that is friendship breakups, the goings on of WhatsApp Groups and night out invites, as well as some very sensitively written mental health issues. White shows mental health issues from all perspectives and that it should not be a taboo subject in this day and age.

Lexi co-hosts a successful podcast with her longtime best pal Amanda, but Amanda's tendency to speak off-the-cuff often lands them in hot water in internet-land. Joanne a new mum and the first of her friends to have a baby, but her pals keep forgetting that she's no longer available for tequila-fuelled nights out, and Claire is the nanny who's Whatsapp chat with her old school friends is ominously quiet these days, which can only mean one thing - a side group without her. I recently heard one of those rare Republican never-Trumpers, Adam Kitzinger, talking on the Bill Maher show, about how his family had decided he was the devil for having turned on Trump.There was at one point I thought it was kind of dragging a bit but it could have been just me going through a funk with the book.
