I hated and loved every relationship of his, just as he did. I felt every moment of frustration, anger, depression, and regret. I felt every loss and every win. This memoir is important because it helps you see that life plays out in interesting ways. Every person you meet has an intricate life of their own, and who they are to you is unique. It’s special.

Lamees al Ethari, author of Waiting for the Rain: An Iraqi Memoir and From the Wounded Banks of the Tigris This memoir rings as a true depiction of what it is to be human. Many things I can empathize with directly, others I can only try to understand given I'm a Canadian born white woman who has never lived outside her native country.

These dishes are steeped in Trinidadian culture, where street food is king. Here’s a chance to try authentic dishes served up on the roadside in Trinidad. The colonizer and colonized were wrapped into one thing. That’s who I am. The Queen is in my brain. But that’s why I throw a Biggie reference with Homer. A Shakespeare reference with Hank Williams. I recognize the legacy of both the skin I’m in and my mind’s design, not by me but by the Queen and King James. And I take hold of both. Downing seamlessly blends poetic images, music, and storytelling to create a poignant and stunningly honest memoir of a young man’s adamant determination to navigate his position and find himself despite the boundaries of colonialism, racism, and the endless sense of disbelonging.” Singularly dazzling, Saga Boy is a brilliant collage of the twenty-first century's most incredible memoirs. Told with an unforgettable and innovative pace, this a book I will reread forever.” Antonio Michael Downing is a musician, writer and activist who now lives in Toronto. He published his first book, the novel Molasses, in 2010. In 2017, he was named one of five writers to participate in the RBC Taylor Prize Emerging Writers Mentorship Program.

Saga Boy: My Life of Blackness and Becoming by REVIEW: Saga Boy: My Life of Blackness and Becoming by

The miracle of Antonio Michael Downing is not that he became a successful professional and artist after all he experienced, but rather that he survived at all. So I did 250 hours of interviews with people who knew me from when I was a baby bump, right up to when I was writing this book. And what I learned was memory is just this thing to protect our egos. We tell ourselves a story—maybe my ex and I are each telling different stories to make ourselves look good. We believe what we want to believe, and remember things that serve our emotional intent. Compelling . . .Saga Boyis an eloquent memoir about Antonio Michael Downing's experiences as an immigrant in a minority population; it centers his resilience." Downing's elegant, engaging memoir will have particular significance to readers from the Caribbean diaspora, but it will be understood by any reader who has ever had their world suddenly upended and needed to make it whole again." The beginnings of who he could become is hinted at when he writes a 'choon' that is sung by Junior's band. Over time Junior spent increasing amounts of time away from home. Eventually he moved out and became "a space I no longer recognized." Michael escaped the lonely craziness of his homelife by retreating into words and songs. He didn't understand that these were the same things Miss Excelly had needed to survive: "how to read and how to sing."

About WordSense

Sean Padmore, better known as Hey Choppi, began his solo career in 2018 under his own production label, Alienation Muzik. In the first two years after leaving Nebula 868 it didn’t occur to the vocally-gifted artist to make a solo album, and instead he channelled his efforts towards releasing singles such as Anchor, Captain , and Siddung. It was not until 2021 that he released his debut album, Love Trip, with the help of producers Brooklyn Descent and Tano. Speaking of the monarchy—I was surprised by your nuanced take on colonialism in the book, and in this interview. I expected it to be more straightforwardly painful. In Saga Boy, Antonio Michael Downing offers expertise and experience, intellect and intimacy; this is a book that names the griefs and violences of colonialism and insists on the tentacular ways they reach into all facets of being. It is also a book about kinship, pleasure, celebration, and love. Saga Boy is the story of a remarkable life, one both relatable and not, told with intricacy. It charts the ways space and time shape people into many, discernible persons within a lifetime. Truly unforgettable.” There will also be, dotted about, an array of lounges. With 25,000sq ft space this is going to be EPIC and those who came to the old Dinerama will underatand just what this locations does for new food brands but more importantly what it does for my mission to introducs doubles to Londoners.

Saga John Orpheus Tells Us About His Sprawling Immigrant Rap Saga

I'm going to preface my review with the fact that I know the author. Therefore I always expected to give this a 5-star review, both because I know his talent and you know, friendly nepotism. However, the book still exceeded my high expectations. Tony became Michael. His first teacher was a nightmare. Not only did she change his name, she tested him and recommended he be put ahead two grades. I gasped as I read this - already seeing the disaster this was likely to become. I remain angry thinking about how different things might have been for him had he been allowed to remain with his peers.

Tony: the scrawny youngster roving the bush country of Trinidad, learning to read from the King James Bible, singing and quoting holy verses to emulate and impress the loving yet stern grandmother who raised him. When he was cut from the university basketball team, he was left with an unfillable void. Downing writes, "basketball had fathered me. I had soaked up second hand daddying from my teammates. Between the sweaty practices, the nail-biting games, and the breathless sprints, I had absorbed the lessons their fathers had taught them." As he grows older, he is able to identify the dysfunction and failure of his parents to provide with the stability and love that would have enabled him to have come into himself sooner and with fortitude. He is then able to take the steps towards confronting that failure and thus move towards healing, which is a lifelong activity.
