Another reason some might not have predicted too many Oscar noms for “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” was the academy’s aversion to recognizing horror films, and that was certainly the case for previous “Dracula” adaptations. Dracula's 4K Blu-ray enjoys what appears to be the exact same outstanding Dolby Atmos track that has adorned not only the previous 2017 4K release but even its preceding 2015 Blu-ray reissue, and, such is the testament to its quality, it continues to be one of the finest tracks on the format. Despite the fact that the now-renowned actor was far from enamoured by the idea of playing Dracula, like anyone at the time - not least a Brit trying to make his way in Hollywood - the mere opportunity to be in Francis Ford Coppola film, let alone star in it, was more than enough reason to commit his heart and soul.

But even those with setups that support only HDR10 will still enjoy a tremendous image with incredible details, beautiful bold colors, and as I said earlier proper subtitle font. The Ultra HD Blu-ray delivers a fabulous native 4K presentation, replete with lashings of filmic grain and texture, and adding in Dolby Vision HDR to this reissue for good measure, providing the cherry on an already delectable cake. I actually think if they shifted the casting a little and let Cary Elwes play Harker with Richard E. It was an unusual story-telling aid at the time, but it replicated Stoker’s novel, like a series of journal entries. To celebrate this film’s 30th Anniversary, Sony curses physical media fanatics with a new two-disc 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBook release. But to sweeten the deal for this release, Sony has gone and added excellent legacy audio tracks to this disc. As anybody familiar with the fictional but likely all-too-close-to-the-truth Paramount+ TV Show, The Offer, will probably know too well, the decade of making cinema-defining classics like Apocalypse Now and The Godfather Part I and Part II was not a particularly forgiving one for Coppola. The film was nominated at BAFTA in four categories: Costume Design, Make Up Artist, Production Design, and Special Effects.

Qualms, niggles, and grumbles aside, I still very much enjoy this film but I’m not blind to its many faults. It marked to date the last celebrated film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who has made five films since that have mostly gone ignored. As it turns out, “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” fared well when it came to two of the biggest awards ceremonies, BAFTA and the Oscars. Coppola’s film unspools like an erotic nightmare, dredging up all the pent-up and sexually charged energy that roils (sometimes barely) below the surface of Stoker’s novel. Awards season in early 1993 didn’t start well for “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” the film being passed over by critics groups outside of a lone Best Cinematography win from the Chicago Film Critics.I was ten years old when this film came out and I’ve had a love of classic monster movies for as long as I could remember, and this was something I desperately wanted to see. But by forcing Dracula into this mold of being a misunderstood romantic, it deadens the seriousness and horror of his atrocities and is incongruous with the rest of the film. Sony once again goes the extra mile for a catalog title, this time giving Bram Stoker’s Dracula - which already had an excellent 4K HDR transfer - a beautiful Dolby Vision upgrade. I love Gary Oldman’s take on the ancient monster with Hopkins turning in a devilishly delightful Van Helsing. In addition, the Golden Globes completely ignored it, which paved the way for the film potentially coming up short on Oscar nominations morning, too.
