It's a reality many girls of color are forced to endure, and it was as refreshing as it was bittersweet to read. The book begun with treason, was followed by murder, and the stakes were only ever raised from there. Revelations were so laden with dread and dismay that they fell into the novel like a rock into a quiet pond, and my astonishment quickly turned to horror. She simply states that the rain starts to fall, and the context of that scene fills in the dark or grave atmosphere for us.

Aside from the fact that she’s a princess and heir to the throne of Yan–which doesn’t mean much because Yan’s monarchy is quite limited and they live in more of a socialist society–Hesina is incredibly ordinary. The main character is way too preoccupied with more important things to get in touch with her romantic feelings, and so for both her and the reader, the romance serves mainly as a light and sweet de-stressor.I hope this book doesn't get buried under the pile of generic YA fantasies with flashier covers and dramatic names like "Queen of Blood/Ash/Shadows/Fire". I enjoyed how it progressed through the book and how at the end they’re not already thinking of each other as soulmates, but rather are willing to dedicate their time to understanding and knowing one another better. I had not managed to organize my puzzlement into a question before the plot begun eddying around in a speedy, gasp-out-loud, page-flipping style—each new certainty leading not to the next steppingstone but into a quagmire. There’s court trials for the murder and the politics is mixed in, as the traitor may lie somewhere in the court .

Despite knowing that it is high treason, she seeks out a sooth to help set her on her path, who tells her the path she should take to find her father's murderer. This serves as one of the conflicts for Hesina, who has to somehow figure out how to change a population’s opinion that has been socialized within her kingdom for over 300 years.Other characters such as Caiyan, Lilian, Sanjing and Akira (heart eyes) were also amazingly written. Descendant of the Crane also features a compelling cast of characters with complex relationships that leave you unsure of how you feel about the events of the narrative.
