Where's the point in going to the trouble and expense of including these reproductions of actual victorian documents, and then not providing typed transcriptions of their contents?

Whitechapel, 1888: a spate of brutal murders becomes the most notorious criminal episode in London's history. The Complete Jack the Ripper is the definitive book by Paul Begg and John Bennett, exploring both the myth and reality behind the allusive killer. We went to London in 2013 and took a "Jack the Ripper" walking tour and saw many of the murder sites first hand, the "10 Bells Pub" where many of the "ladies of the night" hung out. The last section is an interesting look at how modern Whitechapel compares to its Victorian equivalent. Philipp studied English literature and culture and is an expert in the capital’s (and Britain’s) literature and culture.

The whole concept is very cleverly done, with copies of original documents in pockets throughout the book at certain points in the chronology of the crime period. The killer, chillingly nicknamed 'The Whitechapel Murderer', 'Leather Apron' and, most famously, 'Jack the Ripper', is never brought to justice for the slaughter and mutilation of at least five women in the slums of East London. Jack the Ripper: The Casebook takes readers on a tour of Victorian London’s underworld where the slayings took place, from street corner taverns to unsavory lodging houses.

What amateur sleuths will find most fascinating here are the many facsimiles of contemporary documents, including letters allegedly sent by Jack the Ripper to police and elsewhere, police reports, press articles, and personal correspondence. Some witnesses apparently confirmed Barnett's claims, having seen the couple drinking in a tavern in the company of Julia Venturney, another resident of Miller's Court. This book gives a good broad overview of the victims of Jack the Ripper as well as key witnesses and the suspects.Philipp will talk about the perception of the Ripper murders in Germany, beginning with how German media dealt with the case in 1888 and what it is like today (spoiler alert: It includes a terrible German TV adaptation of the Ripper murders). Joseph Barnett was Mary Jane Kelly's roommate until days before she was brutally murdered on Friday 9 November 1888. A thorough analysis of the likely suspects for the identity of "Jack the Ripper" is undergone, including some figures that have only recently been implicated in the murders.
