There are 21 facial expressions that are used to communicate various emotions, according to researchers from Ohio State University. The face is the best indicator of a person’s emotions. Yet, it often is overlooked. Dr. Paul Ekman, whose research is the premise of the show Lie to Me, has done groundbreaking research on decoding the human face. He has shown that facial expressions are universal. The subtitle of this book is "A guide to recognizing emotions from facial expressions". The value is that it has many photos of faces expressing emotions and variations in intensity and combinations of those emotions. It's a training tool for reading faces, and it includes quizzes so you can test yourself. Coupled with that, the three management techniques individuals employ, which are simulating, neutralizing and masking, are also covered in some detail.

When we learn the microexpressions of others and have control of our own, we have greater control of our own life. The expressions can be used to communicate a wide range of emotions, from happiness and joy to sadness and hatred. This also means that people find angry people less trustworthy. With their eyebrows lowered and eyes squinted, it becomes harder to “see” the window to the soul, thus leading to lower levels of perceived trust. Every true or inherited movement of expression seems to have had some natural and independent origin. Body language can tell you when someone feels anxious, angry, excited, or any emotion. It may also suggest personality traits (i.e., whether someone is shy or outgoing). But, body language can be misleading. It is subject to a person's mood, energy level, and circumstances. Other subtle signals such as expanding the arms widely may be an attempt to seem larger or more commanding, while keeping the arms close to the body may be an effort to minimize oneself or withdraw from attention.
