In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth, Greg once planned on calling Rowley "Rupert" or "Roger" in his biography, in Greg Heffley: A Life. Rupert is again shown as an imaginary character in Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson's Journal. He appears in all of the books and all of the movies, and the online version as well, to date, but he only made a small appearance in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Deep End' Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Big Shot and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Diper Överlöde.

In the book series, he has 7 strands of hair that is flat on his head and is wider than Greg's. He has two large teeth and his mouth never appears to be closed, except for a few occasions. Rowley, on the other hand, is not very bright and often does silly things that end up getting Greg in trouble. Despite this, he has a caring but naive personality and always wishes the best for everyone. He can also be quite immature, sleeping with his stuffed toys and prioritizing his Dinoblazer Action Figures over other activities like writing his comic, Zoo-Wee Mama! for the school paper. He also has a fondness for a children's singer named Joshie, which his parents find childish. He even thinks that "volleyball" is actually "bolleyball." Despite his quirks, Rowley's good heart and innocence shine through. His parents' overprotectiveness may be hindering his growth and preventing him from experiencing new things. However, Greg could also benefit from being more considerate of Rowley's feelings and not dragging him into trouble. Ultimately, with better communication and understanding, both Greg and Rowley could improve their friendship and grow as individuals.Although much of Greg’s character is to a degree obnoxious, he does have a number of redeeming features, and his character flaws have become less well-defined as the series has progressed. He is now starting to show signs of maturing into somewhat of a likeable young man as he starts to take responsibility for many of his misdeeds and character flaws. Rowley Jefferson

It is never revealed what country Rowley went to on his trip to South America in the book series, but the online book states that he went to Brazil. It is said in the first film that Rowley went to Guatemala. Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson's Journal is a spin-off of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney. [4] Unlike the main-series books, which are written from the perspective of Greg Heffley, Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid is written from the perspective of Greg's best friend, Rowley Jefferson, acting as Greg's biographer. [5] The book was released on April 9, 2019. [4] [2] A sequel, titled Rowley Jefferson's Awesome Friendly Adventure was released on August 4, 2020, [6] delayed from an initial release date of April 7, 2020. [7] [8] Plot [ edit ] He is the main character of his own spin-off called Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, which also had two sequels called Rowley Jefferson's Awesome Friendly Adventure and Rowley Jefferson's Awesome Spooky Stories. Throughout their adventures, Rowley's endearing personality, loyalty, and genuine nature shine through, making him an indispensable part of Greg's life and the heart of their enduring friendship. It is never revealed what country Rowley went to on his trip to South America in the book series, but the online book states that he went to Brazil. It is said in the first film that Rowley went to Guatemala, although Guatemala is in Central America.Rowley is an immature boy in several ways. For example, he sleeps with his stuffed toys, he likes his Dinoblazer Action Figures and he even quit writing his popular comic, Zoo-Wee Mama!, because he needed time to play with his Dinoblazer Action Figures. He also likes a singer called Joshie, whose audience is young children, mainly girls. On Christmas, he gets many childish things, even giving Greg childish toys like a Big Wheel. In the second film, he got very scared after watching a horror movie called " The Foot," and had to get his parents to take him home. Rowley’s best friend Greg Heffley has been chronicling his middle-school years in thirteen Diary of a Wimpy Kid journals . . . and counting. But it’s finally time for readers to hear directly from Rowley in a journal of his own. In Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, Rowley writes about his experiences and agrees to play the role of biographer for Greg along the way. (After all, one day Greg will be rich and famous, and everyone will want to know his life’s story.) But Rowley is a poor choice for the job, and his “biography” of Greg is a hilarious mess. Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson’s Journal offers readers a new way to look at the Wimpy world—one fans won’t want to miss! This is the first book to have Greg as a minor character, and will probably be the last book to do that. In Rowley's entry about "the time when Greg created a special award just for me," Greg gives Rowley a "good boy award" for cleaning Greg's garage. Greg gives Rowley more awards for doing his chores, and after Rowley says that they aren't special anymore because he has so many, Greg makes a "point system" instead, with Rowley's reward for getting 50 points being a basket of dirty laundry.

For many, Rowley (Want to come over to my house and play?) Jefferson, Greg Heffley’s best friend, is the real hero of the series. A character shaped by his over-protective parents who are certainly not fond of Greg, Rowley is a skilled manipulator who often gets others into trouble while craftily avoiding the blame himself. Initially coming across as somewhat of an immature idiot, he often displays Jekyll and Hyde-like characteristics, being able to move effortlessly from antagonist to caring peacemaker. At first sight the overweight and overly-protected innocent, first impressions prove deceptive, as he often shows real strength of character when in stressful situations. Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2007 print book, 2010 movie) Rowley starts his diary by explaining that he started writing in one because his best friend, Greg Heffley, owns one as well. In the second entry, Rowley shows his diary to Greg, who accuses Rowley of copying him. Greg then comes up with the idea that Rowley's journal should be Greg's biography. Rowley complies, and changes the title of his diary from Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid to Diary of Greg Heffley by Greg Heffley's Best Friend Rowley Jefferson.Simon, Scott. "The Wimpy Kid's Best Friend Gets A Diary Of His Own ... And He's 'Awesome' ". NPR . Retrieved 15 April 2019. No-one does the straight to camera narrative style of the diary better than Kinney ... This is as authentic and funny as the original Wimpy Kid books and makes just as irresistible reading.' - Andrea Reece, LoveReading4Kids Reviewer In the online book, Rowley is said to own a PlayStation with 42 games. However, in the movie, Rowley is shown to have a Wii, meaning that he possibly upgraded his console.
