Description

Anthology spans 20 years of recordings in various configurations, including collaborations with double-bassist Dave Green and saxophonists Peter King, Evan Parker, and Courtney Pine. These set the tone for the album, and while there is plenty of Watts’ studio work on the record, Anthology is at its best during the live cuts.

CHARLIE WATTS – ANTHOLOGY SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: CHARLIE WATTS – ANTHOLOGY

More from the May 10 announcement: Anthology is a celebration of the faultlessly tasteful and inventive playing of a true inspiration to millions, who generously diverted the spotlight onto his brilliant, hand-picked collaborators. Across Anthology, these include such greats as his lifelong friend and double bass stalwart Dave Green, saxophonists such as Peter King, Evan Parker and Courtney Pine, trumpeter Gerard Presencer, fellow drum titan Jim Keltner and vocalist and Rolling Stones live band member Bernard Fowler. It also includes three tracks from a performance by Watts and his group at Swindon Arts Centre in the U. While he released many albums as a band leader, the best of his jazz material – including collaborations with Dave Green, Peter King, Jim Keltner, and Bernard Fowler – has been collected into the massive Anthology, the first posthumous solo release since his passing in 2021. Unlike in most bands where the other musicians follow the lead of the drummer, Watts followed Richards; according to New York Times critic Michiko Kakutani, that is what "makes the Stones impossible to copy".Watts played regularly with Blues Incorporated and maintained a job with the advertising firm Charles, Hobson and Gray. Anthology features liner notes by music journalist and broadcaster Paul Sexton, the author of Charlie’s Good Tonight: The Authorised Biography of Charlie Watts, published by HarperCollins. He’s joined by old friends: Ian Stewart, the hidden sixth Stone, is on piano, while the bassist Dave Green, a childhood friend and neighbour from the Wembley prefabs where Watts was raised, is on bass (as he is on most of Watts’ jazz releases over the next four decades). This section features Watts with a full jazz orchestra as they perform six consecutive jazz ballads over the course of nearly half an hour. Available both in double vinyl and double CD editions, Anthology is a monument to the “other” musical identity of the giant who underpinned the Rolling Stones for more than 55 years.

Watts and his family subsequently moved to Kingsbury, where he attended Tylers Croft Secondary Modern School from 1952 to 1956; as a schoolboy, he displayed a talent for art, music, cricket and football.

The Rolling Stones’ Charlie Watts’ Jazz Recordings Compiled

In the July 2006 issue of Modern Drummer magazine, Watts was voted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame, joining Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, Steve Gadd, Buddy Rich and other highly esteemed and influential drummers from the history of rock and jazz. The montage was set to the Rolling Stones' 1974 track " If You Can't Rock Me", which opens with the lines "The band's on stage and it's one of those nights . Although the cause of death was never officially stated, Keith Richards mentioned in March 2022 that Watts had cancer. It then features selections from the Charlie Watts Quintet’s 1991 mini-album From One Charlie, their albums A Tribute to Charlie Parker with Strings (1992), Warm and Tender (1993) and Long Ago and Far Away (1996), the 2000 collaboration Charlie Watts – Jim Keltner Project and another live set, 2004’s Watts at Scott’s, as the Charlie Watts Tentet. What is less known is Watts’ career as a jazz musician, something he began exploring in between tours and on off nights throughout the ‘80s.Across Anthology, these include such greats as his lifelong friend and double bass stalwart Dave Green, saxophonists such as Peter King, Evan Parker and Courtney Pine, trumpeter Gerard Presencer, fellow drum titan Jim Keltner and vocalist and Rolling Stones live band member Bernard Fowler. If jazz taught him one thing, then it was sometimes it is not what you play, but what you don’t: it’s all about leaving space into which the listener can infer their own meaning, and there’s plenty of room for interpretation on this collection.
